One of the English standards we must teach is understanding the rules of the English language and using them properly. To address this, we use a Daily Grammar Practice which I get from a grade level program produced by Dawn Burnette from DGP Publishing Inc. in Blairsville, Georgia. Each week we take a sentence pulled from literature and perform different daily tasks. I prepare a graphic organizer for this.
On Monday, the students identify the different parts of speech in the sentence. They identify nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections.
On Tuesday, the students identify the different parts of the sentence, such as subject, predicate, prepositional phrases, etc.
On Wednesday, the students determine the purpose and structure. The purposes we must consider are declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. The structures are simple, complex, compound, and compound-complex.
On Thursday, the students correct the capitalization and punctuation.
On Friday, we diagram the sentence.
Toward the end of the year, the sentences will be easier so the students can work more independently.
